Fall Opportunities
Covenant Players—September 21
We are excited to invite you to worship on Sunday, September 21 to experience the dramatic touring group, Covenant Players. They will be with us for the morning worship service at 10:15 a.m. These unique Christian actors will present the sermon and other parts of the service.
Those who have experienced the Covenant Players tell us that they are truly relevant, incisive and amusing in their well-presented dramatic plays. In this day and age, when people read less and watch TV more, this dramatic approach to the Gospel has an increasing contribution to make in sharing God’s truth with our contemporary culture.
We will be hosting the players (four actors) at various homes of our congregation. If you are available to host or entertain for a meal, please contact the church office at 973-379-4320.
We look forward to the Covenant Players adding an exciting dimension to our worship service on September 21st.
October Bible Study Series beginning Wednesday October. 8
Wrestling with Angels; An Intimate Look at the Tough Questions of Life.
Pastor Vicky will lead a six-part Bible study dealing with the questions that all of us have asked at one time or another. Through moving testimonials and the commentary of noted authors like Tony Campolo and Philip Yancey on video, we will look at some of the most troubling questions of faith and ethics such as “Why didn’t God answer my prayers?” “How do I know what to do?” and “How do I forgive and get on with my life?” Beginning Wednesday October 8, we will offer two identical study times per week (Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. and Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.) in the Parish House.
December Bible Study Series beginning December 3. Pastor Vicky will lead a two-week Advent Bible study series on Mary, the mother of Jesus.
Yoga
Have you always wanted to try yoga, yet worried about those “pretzel poses”? Well…
Starting this fall, The First Presbyterian Church in Springfield is offering two yoga classes: Beginners’ Yoga and Chair Yoga.
Both classes will be an introduction to yoga with exploration of slow, gentle movement, stretching, and healthy alignment. Breathing and relaxation techniques will be fully incorporated into each class. In Chair Yoga, a chair or the wall will provide support. Yoga has many benefits, including increased strength and flexibility, improved balance and concentration, and stress relief.
The 9 week session begins on Thursday, September 25, 2008. Classes are an hour long: Beginners’ Yoga at 9 AM, followed by Chair Yoga at 10:15 AM. Childcare will be provided. Classes will be held in the auditorium of our Parish House, (37 Church Mall—the large room across from our main office). Classes will be taught by Janna Sage Peterson, a Registered Yoga Alliance Teacher. Fellowship time will follow each class. Lunch and a Movie
Our first lunch and a movie program for the fall will be on Wednesday, September 17 at noon in the Parish House Auditorium. Our movie this month will be “Akeelah and the Bee” starring Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett This film is the inspiring story of a poor child from South Los Angeles who overcomes overwhelming odds and earns an opportunity to compete for a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. It is an uplifting film whose theme is “change the world—one word at a time.”
We always have a lovely afternoon, with lunch provided by the Outreach Committee. If you have never attended one of our lunch and movie events, this is the perfect time! All are invited—you need not be a member of the congregation to attend. Please call the office (973-379-4320) to let us know how many will be attending. We have a place saved for you!
Rally Day—September 14
We will officially “kick-off” our program year with Rally Day on Sunday, September 14th. You may officially register your child for Sunday School either before or after worship that day. (classes officially begin on Sunday, September 28). We have classes for children 2nd grade through high school on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in the Parish House. Also, there is a preschool through 1st grade class during the church service at 10:15 a.m. This year all children are invited to attend worship first, and then exit to either nursery care or Sunday School after the Children’s sermon during the service.
New Nursery Care Assistance
To assist both parents and nursery attendants, we are pleased to announce that we now offer a wireless paging system for families using the church-time care. This lighted “beeper” can be activated if a parent is needed in the nursery. Onsight paging provides peace of mind for care for our youngsters!
“Sundaes on Sunday” Ice Cream Social—September 14
As part of our Rally Day festivities, the Outreach committee will host an ice cream social after the worship service on Sunday, September 14. Come make your own sundaes with all the fixin’s while you meet and greet members and friends of our congregation at the coffee hour fellowship. Have a sweet treat after church!
