"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1)
Welcome to the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield. We are a congregation rich in history, ministry and discipleship. Our lovely church has stood as a landmark at the corner of Morris Avenue and Church Mall for many years.
But as historic as our building may be, our calling is to serve the community, not as a museum but as a body of faithful believers who love and serve in the name of Jesus Christ. If you are looking for a church family to walk beside you in your journey of life and faith, we invite you to join us. As any good host would, we'll keep an eye out for you. But if, by chance, we miss you, please tap any of us on the shoulder for information about the church. You’re sure to get a rich response!
"One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism" (Philippians 4:5a)
Who we are and what we believe
We are a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the Presbytery of Elizabeth. We believe that our Creator God is the supreme authority in life, as in death, and that our knowledge of God and God’s purpose for humanity comes from the Bible, particularly what is revealed in the New Testament through the life of Jesus Christ. We believe that we are made right with God through Christ, not through our own doings. But it is in response to God’s gift of forgiving grace that we commit ourselves to sharing the Good News with the world. We believe that God’s work in the world is ongoing through the Holy Spirit and we that we are called to be grateful ambassadors of God’s love, grace, mercy and peace.
"For all of you are one in Christ." (Galatians 3:28)
What to expect
We welcome all to the body of Christ and invite you to join us for worship, study and fellowship. You will find that some dress in their “Sunday best” for morning worship and others come very casually attired. Feel free to dress in whatever manner you feel most comfortable.
Our music director, Liliya Khobotkova, is a very talented keyboardist and vocal choir director. She makes the organ ring, the piano sing and the choir resound.
Our pastor generally preaches from either the Revised Common Lectionary or a biblical theme that is appropriate to the season. Either way, you're sure to hear a message that engages your mind and encourages your soul.
We have Sunday School for young children after the Time with Children during our Sunday service, Confirmation Class in our Parish House on Sundays @ 9am, and seasonal Bible Discovery for Adults is generally held on Tuesdays evenings @ 7pm in the Church Library of our Parish House @ 37 Church Mall. Check the calendar for specific dates.
A Fellowship Hour is offered in our "Chapel" after Sunday morning worship and an Information Table is located near the refreshments. Go through the doors at the front of the sanctuary to access the Chapel, the Kitchen, the Fireside Room and the Restrooms.
